SimpleBLE v1.1: Java and Android are now on Maven Central

SimpleBLE v1.1 publishes its Java and Android bindings to Maven Central, adds an Android-native Kotlin API, and improves BLE behavior across platforms.

TLDR: Java and Android bindings are now available from Maven Central, SimpleDroidBLE gives Android applications a Kotlin-first API, and SimpleBLE Explorer shows the complete workflow from permissions to notifications. Full release notes: SimpleBLE v1.1.0.

SimpleBLE v1.1 is out. The main change is simple: Java and Android developers can now install SimpleBLE directly from Maven Central.

No repository checkout, no native build, and no extra assembly just to start talking to a Bluetooth device.

Java is now one dependency

SimpleJavaBLE now takes one Gradle dependency:

dependencies {
    implementation("org.simpleble:simplejavable:1.1.0")
}

A native Kotlin API for Android

Android needed something a little different. SimpleDroidBLE is our Android-only Kotlin API around the same SimpleBLE core, and it is also available from Maven Central:

dependencies {
    implementation("org.simpleble:simpledroidble:1.1.0")
}

Android's BLE APIs expose a lot of state and callback plumbing. In our experience, that makes it surprisingly easy to end up with bugs and edge cases.

SimpleDroidBLE follows the same design principles as SimpleBLE, but presents them in a way that feels natural in a Kotlin application. The package also brings along the native libraries and dependencies it needs. SimpleDroidBLE is currently in beta and supports Android only.

See the complete workflow in Explorer

We also replaced the old Android example with SimpleBLE Explorer. Instead of stopping after a scan or connection, Explorer walks through the complete flow: requesting permissions, scanning, connecting, inspecting GATT services, reading and writing values, and subscribing to notifications or indications.

A few more changes

The JVM packages are the headline, but there is more in v1.1:

  • Extended-advertisement scanning on Android and Windows
  • Cached CoreBluetooth peripheral retrieval on macOS and iOS
  • Broader Python access to backend and configuration APIs
  • Fixes for Android write truncation, Java callback lifetime and exception handling, notification cleanup, and Windows GATT discovery

On Linux, the deprecated legacy BlueZ backend has been removed. Applications that selected it through the C++ or C configuration API should remove that configuration when upgrading.

Try SimpleBLE v1.1

That's v1.1: a much shorter path from adding SimpleBLE to talking to a device.
